The Church of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church is located on Route 86 in Gabriels in the Town of Brighton. It is one of the Parishes in the Diocese of Ogdensburg. The rectory is in Bloomingdale, where the Pastor resides, and Assumption is a mission Parish.

There are 57 families in the census at this time, residing in Gabriels, Rainbow Lake, Onchiota, and on the Harrietstown Road.

Rev. Francis J. Flynn was installed as Pastor in July 2000, after having been appointed as Administrator in 1999. Prior to becoming Pastor of the Church of the Assumption and St. Paul's in Bloomingdale, as well as Chaplain to Camp Gabriels Correctional Facility and Paul Smith's College, Fr. Flynn was Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Newman Parish which served Clarkson University and Potsdam State University. Fr. Flynn has served in St. John's Parish (Plattsburgh), St. Joseph's Church (Malone), St. John in the Wilderness (Lake Clear), St. Gabriels (Paul Smiths), St. Augustine's (North Bangor), and St. Edward's (West Bangor). Father also worked for seven years in the Mission of St. Martin de Porres in Mollendo, Peru, South America, and three years in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

Fr. Francis Flynn states, "I have always enjoyed this area of the Adirondacks, and was surprised when I found out that I would he returning to the area as Pastor of Assumption and St. Paul's. I have been here less than two years, but have been so busy that the time flies by, and I still feel like I am just getting started. The people have been very supportive and willing to pitch in wherever their help is needed."

Masses are scheduled at 9:00 a.m. on Sundays, and 8:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays. Adoration and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is held on the first Friday of every month from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This provides a great opportunity for anyone to sit and enjoy a quiet time for prayer and reflection.

One tradition started a few years ago is to have a coffee hour after Mass on the first Sunday of the month. Parishioners provide homemade donuts and coffee cakes to be enjoyed with coffee, and there is milk and orange juice available for the children. Several parishioners like this time to have a chance to visit with each other and maybe get to meet new people in the parish.

Assumption Church sponsors the Brighton Food Pantry. This is designed to provide some food items for families who can use this kind of assistance. Food is distributed twice a month at the Brighton Town Hall.

Jeanne St. John chaired a bazaar and food sale in August this year to benefit the parish. $868 was realized from this sale.
